Oia

Fira (Thira)
The capital of Santorini. Stay here for the widest selection of restaurants, bars, and clubs. It still offers incredible caldera views but is much busier. It is also the main transit hub, making it the most convenient base for taking buses to the rest of the island.
Kamari & Perissa
Located on the eastern and southern coasts. Stay here if you want to swim in the sea every day. These towns feature dramatic black volcanic sand beaches, a massive array of beach bars and tavernas, and hotels that are significantly cheaper than those on the caldera.

Best for honeymoons and ultimate luxury
Oia. It is the undeniable star of Santorini. If budget is no object and you want the absolute best photos, the finest dining, and the most iconic views, this is where you stay.
Best for couples wanting caldera views without the crowds
Imerovigli. It is higher up than Oia, offering arguably better, panoramic views of the volcano. It is strictly residential and hotel-focused, meaning you avoid the massive influx of cruise ship passengers.
Best for first-timers and getting around
Fira. It is the hub. You have incredible views, excellent nightlife, and the main bus station, making it incredibly easy to take day trips to the beaches or Oia without renting a car.
Best for families and budget travelers
Kamari or Perissa. The cliffside hotels are mostly adults-only and very dangerous for toddlers. The beach towns offer flat walking, safe swimming, huge family resorts, and much cheaper food.

How do I get from the airport/ferry port to my hotel?
The public KTEL buses are cheap but only go to Fira (you must transfer there for Oia or the beaches). Taxis are limited. Pre-booking a private or shared transfer through your hotel or an online service is highly recommended.
Are the cliffside hotels accessible?
Rarely. Almost all hotels in Oia, Imerovigli, and parts of Fira require navigating dozens (sometimes hundreds) of steep, uneven stone steps. If mobility is an issue, you must verify step-free access before booking, or stay in Kamari/Perissa.
Can you drink the tap water in Santorini?
No. The tap water is desalinated seawater; it is safe for brushing your teeth and showering, but it is very salty and not meant for drinking. You will need to buy bottled water.
Should I rent a car or an ATV?
ATVs (quad bikes) are extremely popular but highly dangerous on the island's winding, steep roads. Renting a small car is safer if you want to explore. If you stay in Fira, you can easily rely on the cheap public bus system.
