Myeongdong. It offers the most central location. You have excellent access to the massive subway network, limitless dining options, and you can walk to Namsan Mountain and the palaces.
Best for young travelers, budget, and late nights
Hongdae. The energy here is infectious. It is cheaper than Myeongdong or Gangnam, packed with university students, and the nightlife runs until the subway opens the next morning.
Best for history lovers and a quieter vibe
Jongno (Insadong). If you want to wake up and immediately see ancient architecture instead of neon signs, this is the area. It feels much more traditional and is generally quieter at night.

How do I get from Incheon Airport (ICN) to the city center?
The AREX (Airport Railroad Express) train is the fastest and cheapest option. The all-stop train takes about 60 minutes to Seoul Station (and stops at Hongdae), while the express train takes 43 minutes directly to Seoul Station.
Is the subway easy to use?
Yes, it is one of the best subway systems in the world. It is clean, cheap, and all signs and announcements are in English. Buy a T-Money card at any convenience store, load it with cash, and tap in and out of the stations.
Why doesn't Google Maps work well in Seoul?
Due to South Korean security laws regarding North Korea, foreign companies cannot store local map data on foreign servers. Google Maps cannot give walking or driving directions. You must download the local apps: Naver Map or KakaoMap.
Is it safe to walk around at night?
Seoul is incredibly safe. Violent crime is extremely rare. You can comfortably walk around major areas like Myeongdong, Hongdae, and Gangnam late at night. The biggest danger is usually aggressive traffic and delivery scooters on sidewalks.
