Best areas to stay in Shenzhen

Because Shenzhen is spread out from east to west, choosing the right district is essential for minimizing commute times on the massive metro system.

Business, Luxury & Transit

Futian District (CBD)

The modern, highly organized central business district. Stay here for ultra-luxury hotels, wide boulevards, massive underground shopping malls (like Coco Park), and immediate access to the high-speed rail station connecting directly to Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

Tech Hub, Theme Parks & Coast

Nanshan District

The western district bordering the bay. Stay here if you are visiting Tencent, DJI, or other tech giants, or if you want to be near the massive Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) theme parks. It has a younger, tech-focused vibe and offers great waterfront parks.

Shopping, Food & Original City

Luohu District

The oldest and easternmost part of the city center. Stay here for a denser, more traditional Chinese city experience. It is home to the famous Dongmen Pedestrian Street, incredible local food, and the main pedestrian border crossing into Hong Kong.

Resorts & Beaches

Yantian District (Dameisha & Xiaomeisha)

Located far to the east of the city center. Stay here if you want a resort vacation rather than a city break. It features long, sandy beaches, coastal mountains, and massive resort hotels looking out over Mirs Bay.

Which area is right for your trip?

Best for business travelers and luxury

Futian. It is the polished, modern center of the city. The streets are wide, the hotels are 5-star, and the transit connections (especially to Hong Kong) are unbeatable.

Best for tech professionals and families

Nanshan. If you are doing business in the High-Tech Park, you must stay here. It is also the best area for families due to the massive concentration of theme parks in the OCT area.

Best for shopping, food, and budget travelers

Luohu. It is older, grittier, and more chaotic than Futian, but it offers a much more authentic street-level experience, cheaper hotels, and the massive Dongmen market.

Best for weekend escapes and beach resorts

Yantian (Dameisha). If you are looking to escape the city concrete entirely, this eastern district offers coastal mountain views and massive beachside resorts.

Compare Shenzhen hotels by location before you book

The easiest way to plan your tech-city trip is to compare hotels directly on the map. Check which properties are near a Metro station, compare luxury stays in Futian, and find the spot that fits your travel plans perfectly.

Shenzhen Hotel Map FAQ

How do I get from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

The fastest way is the High-Speed Rail from West Kowloon to Futian (14 minutes). Alternatively, you can take the Hong Kong MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau stations, walk across the pedestrian border, and immediately enter the Shenzhen Metro.

Do I need a visa to enter Shenzhen?

Most nationalities need a Chinese visa. However, Shenzhen offers a special 5-Day Visa on Arrival (VOA) for many nationalities at specific border crossings (like Luohu/Lo Wu). Note: US citizens are generally excluded from the VOA and must arrange a visa in advance.

Do I need a VPN in Shenzhen?

Yes. The Great Firewall of China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and many Western news sites. You must download and install a reliable VPN before you arrive in China.

Can I use cash or credit cards?

China is almost entirely a cashless society. While major 5-star hotels accept Visa/Mastercard, almost all street vendors, taxis, and restaurants expect payment via WeChat Pay or Alipay. You should link your foreign credit card to Alipay before arriving.
