Are Amsterdam hotel rooms very small?
Yes. Because the historic canal houses are narrow and hundreds of years old, rooms (and especially staircases) in the center are famously small and steep. If you need modern space and elevators, look for international chain hotels or stay slightly outside the historic rings.
Do I need to stay near Centraal Station?
It's convenient, but not necessary. Amsterdam has an excellent tram network that will easily take you from the station to the Museum Quarter or the Jordaan in 15 minutes.
Is it safe to stay in the Red Light District?
Yes, De Wallen is very safe and heavily policed, but it is extremely loud, crowded, and rowdy late into the night. It is not recommended if you are looking for a quiet, romantic trip or traveling with children.
Where should I stay if I have a car?
Do not bring a car into central Amsterdam if you can avoid it; parking is excruciatingly expensive (often €50-€80+ per day). If you must drive, look for hotels on the outskirts (like Amsterdam Zuid) that offer dedicated parking, and take the tram in.
